Girls golf clinches first team state bid since 2010

Led by Emersen Motl’s silver-medal 80 on the card, the Little Cyclone girls golf team qualified to the state tournament since winning the state championship in 2010. The Little Cyclones recorded a team score of 367 to take second place in the IGHSAU Regional in Ames. Southeast Polk took home the regional team title with a team score of 344. Dowling Catholic finish 19 strokes behind Ames for a third-place regional finish.

The top-two teams in the 10-team regional played the challenging Veenker Memorial Golf Course clinched a spot at next week’s IGHSAU State Golf Championship. The two-day event will start next Thursday, May 25 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Ankeny.

Motl, along with teammate Elizabeth Duncan both qualified individually as freshmen a year ago. Duncan carded a 83 on Wednesday to take fifth regionally. Estelle Wong (98) and Danielle Randick (106) recorded the two other scoring marks for the Little Cyclones. Leah Becker and Jessie Lohman will join the team at the state tournament next Thursday.
