Posted January 10, 2023

Ames girls wrestling took home the Mendenhall Invitational team title Saturday. The Little Cyclones topped the 10-team field with 178 points, edging out runner-up Mason City’s 169 points.

It’s the first year for IGHSAU-sanctioned girls wrestling in Iowa, the Ames girls already have two invitational titles to their name. The Little Cyclones won the 15-team Valley Tournament on December 10th, edging Cedar Falls and Southeast Polk for the top spot.

The Mendenhall Invitational saw five Little Cyclones claim the top spot on the podium. Greta Goodman (100), Lexa Rozevink (120), Alexis Winkey (125), Leah Stagg (145), and Allison Metschke (170) all won their respective brackets.

On the boys side of the tournament, the Little Cyclones finished 9th of 17 teams, but claimed two individual champions. Previously unranked Jackson Winkey provided one of the surprises of the tournament in the 170 division, becoming only one of two unranked wrestlers to take the top podium spot. At 285, fifth-ranked Kyler Hall took the crown and improved his overall record to 20-1 on the season.
