Boys basketball takes down No. 8 Cedar Falls

Posted January 31, 2023

The Ames boys basketball program has been hot since a narrow-loss to a top-10 West Des Moines Valley team in the middle of December. At that point, the Little Cyclones had lost four-straight games – including three to opponents in the top-10.

The 56-46 Ames win on Friday night over eighth-ranked Cedar Falls marked the ninth consecutive victory for the Little Cyclones, while holding six of those opponents to below 40 points. The win also added another signature victory to the Ames resume following a victory over then-No.8 Pleasant Valley at the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout in Cedar Rapids on January 14th.

The storm cooled off a bit the following day when Ames lost to currently No. 9-ranked Norwalk by four, 53-49, but the nine victories in 10 games for the Little Cyclones comes at an opportune time as teams are jockeying for postseason seeding. Ames should lock-up a home playoff game regardless, but the Little Cyclones are aiming to maintain a top-16 position to also secure a first-round bye in the substate tournament.

Ames has a chance at an IAC-North Division title in the coming weeks: a win over both Waterloo East (home, February 3) and Marshalltown (away, February 7) would secure a divisional title. Alternatively, a win over either of those two teams coupled with a win over Mason City in the conference finale on February 10th would also guarantee at least a share of the league title.
